The GIS group in Cardiff is part of the Knowledge & Information Systems group in the School of Computer Science, University of Cardiff, Wales.
We carry out research in several areas of geographic information science and spatial data management. Some recent research projects addressed problems of multi-scale data access and map generalisation, qualitative spatial reasoning, spatio-temporal data modelling, environmental change detection, historical and cultural GIS, spatial query interface design, geo-ontologies, geographic information retrieval on the web and geographic search engines.
Applicability is an important aspect of our research and this is reflected in productive research collaborations with organisations such as ESRI, Ordnance Survey, Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology and the National Museum of Wales. Research council grant funding has been received from EPSRC, ESRC and NERC and the EU.
If you are interested in doing a PhD in a topic on the use or study of spatial or spatio-temporal data then get in touch with Prof. C.B. Jones or Dr. A.I. Abdelmoty.
While you're here, why not have a look who we are and what we're up to.
